The Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER) invites applicants for the position of Climate Change Associate

The successful candidate will be keen to join our team to  support project implementation in the areas of climate change, energy conservation and community communication.  The role of Climate Change Associate is best suited for an individual that  is able to work closely and collaboratively  in a team setting but is also a motivated  self-starter in  accomplishing  project work. We love people with ideas and the willingness and commitment to try to solve problems. Although the majority of your time will be supporting green energy and community retrofit programs (80%), you will support other CIER initiatives (20%) as well. As a national First Nation directed environmental non-profit organization with charitable status,  CIER’s  mission is to work in partnership with Indigenous governments to support and build sustainable Indigenous communities and a healthy environment.  Our work focuses on the many aspects of building sustainable communities and protecting lands and waters.

CIER is very interested in people with a background that reflects decolonization and community empowerment, and who  are comfortable working with a team with people of diverse ethnicities, backgrounds, and experiences. As an organisation, we  support and work towards reconciliation with Indigenous and non-Indigenous allies. We are a team of like-minded individuals who strive to build environmental capacity in and with Indigenous government partners.  CIER personnel  work  in a virtual office  setting and we offer flex work arrangements. This position  will  include  travelling to remote communities and urban centres on a regular basis. 
 
Essential Skills  

Education Bachelors degree or diploma in  a relevant social (anthropology, sociology, law) or energy related sciences, with experience  directly relevant to the scope of this position  (ie.  a combination of post-secondary education or training and relevant work experience will be considered).​  
Experience Experience in at least one of the following fields:
> Net-zero carbon programs  
> Energy conservation Retrofit programs
> Retrofit programs  
> Renewable Energy (solar power, wind, etc.) 
– Experience working within Indigenous organizations. 
– Experience working with or for Indigenous Governments to deliver community-driven projects and programs.  
Knowledge – An understanding of Indigenous histories, Aboriginal Rights and Title, environmental issues, policies and laws. 
– An understanding of climate change, energy conservation and retrofit programs, etc.  
Skills and Abilities – Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing;  
– Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Office applications. 
– Ability to multi-task with limited supervision. 
– Friendly, optimistic disposition with  strong interpersonal skills. 
– Attention to detail  and deadlines.  
Nice to Have – Fluency in a second language (French or an Indigenous language(s). 
– Experience working with google docs, Microsoft Teams, Zoom. 
– Experience working in a virtual office.  

 
Other Requirements  
Given the virtual nature of CIER’s  work,  the  successful candidate  must have  access to a secure and reliable internet connection and a laptop with fully functional  WIFI  capability.   A valid class 5 license is required.  Travel to large urban centres as well as small Indigenous communities is required. 
 
Salary  is commensurate with qualifications  and is negotiable. Although preference will be given to Indigenous applicants (including First Nations, Métis and Inuit), all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply (please self-identify in the cover letter).
