Collaborative Community-Based App Moves Forward

The next phase of CIER’s Community Based Monitoring (CBM) app has come to an end thanks to the generous support from the Donner Canadian Foundation, and Tech for Nature (RBC). The CBM app provides a unique structure—the community will own, store, and manage 100% of the data. The community will host its own secure database that will allow the ability to grant permissions and access.

This phase of the CBM app has been designed to work as a field guide to document wildlife observations, which lines up well as spring approaches. Future phases of the app will include Fish Health and Traditional Knowledge. The previous phase, which includes features for water quality, has seen interest from Indigenous communities across Canada.

If your community is interested in a user-friendly app to use with your existing CBM program, please contact Sjoerd van der Wielen, Senior Project Manager at CIER ([email protected]). CIER is able to provide training, some hardware, and the app at no cost. All that is asked in return is your community’s app user experience feedback.
