Workshop: Generating Understanding and Tools for Sharing Indigenous Knowledge

Thursday, November 27, 2025 / 11am – 2pm (CST)

The Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER) invites Indigenous communities to attend a half-day virtual workshop focused on understanding and addressing the complexities of Indigenous data protection and sovereignty.  The workshop will be open nationally to Indigenous community members, Knowledge Holders, Elders, and technical staff. Indigenous peoples from all distinction groups (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) will be invited to attend.

The information collected at the workshop will be used to inform ways to support Indigenous and federal partners in building trust when working together to understand cumulative effects. This workshop responds to a previous series funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) during which Indigenous communities recommended that complexities of sharing Indigenous-owned information be addressed.

At the upcoming workshop, participants will be encouraged to discuss what has worked effectively for them in the past, including factors that fostered understanding and built trust, such as knowledge sharing agreements and other communication products or tools. CIER staff will support the workshop through facilitation and by summarizing the information shared in these discussions.

Government of Canada officials/staff will not attend the session, but please be advised that the information collected in these discussions will be provided to ECCC in a summary report and used in CIER’s development of a new knowledge sharing agreement template for ECCC.

If you are interested in attending, please register through the Zoom link below before November 27, 2025. Your registration is crucial for us to tailor the session to best support your needs. After registering, you will receive a Zoom meeting link to join the workshop.
