CLOSED: Climate Change Associate

The Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER) invites applicants for the position of Climate Change Associate.

The successful candidate will be keen to join our team to support project implementation in the areas of Indigenous community climate change adaptation and mitigation, food sovereignty and community communication. The role of Climate Change Associate is best suited for an individual that is able to work closely and collaboratively in a team setting but is also a motivated self-starter in accomplishing project work. We love people with ideas and the willingness and commitment to try to solve problems. Although the bulk of your work will be related to climate change and food sovereignty (75%), you will support other CIER projects (25%). Please check out our website to get a feel for the type of work CIER is doing.

As a national First Nation-directed environmental non-profit organization with charitable status, CIER’s mission is to work in partnership with Indigenous nations to support and build sustainable Indigenous communities and a healthy environment. Our work focuses on the many aspects of building sustainable communities and protecting lands and waters. CIER is very interested in people with a background that reflects decolonization and community empowerment, and who are comfortable working with a team with people of diverse ethnicities, backgrounds, and experiences. As an organisation, we support and work towards reconciliation with Indigenous Nations and non-Indigenous allies. We are a team of like-minded individuals who strive to build environmental capacity in and with Indigenous community partners. CIER personnel most often work in a virtual office setting (so you do not need to move to take this position, as long as you have good internet access) and we offer flex work arrangements. This position might include travelling to remote communities (when it is safe to do so).

Essential Skills

  • Experience working with or for Indigenous governments and communities to deliver community-driven projects and programs
  • Strong understanding of and experience working with Indigenous histories, environmental issues, policy and laws, including addressing the challenges they face

  • Friendly, optimistic attitude with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Superior attention to detail and meeting deadlines
  • Superior analytical and organizational skills with an ability to balance multiple priorities and produce tangible results in a fast-paced work environment
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in physical or social science (biology, ecology etc., public policy, law, anthropology, economics, etc.) A combination of post-secondary education or training and relevant work experience may be considered if the experience is directly relevant to the scope of this position.

Nice to Have

  • Fluency in Indigenous language(s) and/or French
  • Experience working in a virtual office
