Seven Species At Risk guidebooks have been developed for the Species At Risk Project.
The guidebooks were created through a partnership between CIER and Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) funded Species at Risk Act – Consultation, Cooperation, and Accommodation (SARA-CCA) Project that began in 2021.
Over the past years, CIER and ECCC have heard many differing perspectives from Indigenous participants across the nation, with many comments related to a lack of capacity and training within and among natural resource departments in communities. This series of guidebooks is CIER’s response to the specific requests from numerous communities to provide additional training and support to help fill some of those existing gaps.
A diligent team of researchers and biologists gathered data, photos, and visuals that were shaped into seven accessible and visually appealing guidebooks. This list covers some of the topics from each guidebook:
- Understanding the Species At Risk Act
- Starting a Species At Risk Project
- Community Engagement and Indigenous Knowledge
- Species At Risk Wildlife and Plant Sampling and Research Techniques
- Wildlife and Plant Data Analysis and Management
- Geographic information Systems
- Communication Tools for Sharing
- Fact Sheets
- Project Start-Up Package
- Funding Programs
- Case Studies
Currently, the English language versions can be accessed here, and the French language versions will be available before summer 2026. Additionally, there will be a free Ecoversity course available later this spring. Keep an eye out for updates.
The team at CIER would like to thank every Indigenous community, Nation, and organization across the country who worked with us on this project since its inception.
