CIER and the Network of Nature are working together to encourage everyone in Canada to consider the benefits of a naturalized yard.
CIER has partnered with Canadian Geographic Magazine and Dougan Ecology to work with Indigenous experts and integrate Indigenous Knowledge and science to broaden the Network of Nature – Native Plants database. This database, created to connect people to plants across Canada, aims to strengthen biodiversity by providing tools, inspiration, and knowledge that can be used to enhance existing green-spaces and naturalize developed areas with locally suitable native plant species.
Canada’s biodiversity has declined by 70% over the last 50 years. As awareness of biodiversity challenges continues to grow, more and more people are planning to take action. One such way is by transforming your yard or property into a haven of biodiversity.
The Network of Nature experts are well-positioned to take on this work—they shared success stories from the decision to naturalize their yards. One Elder shared that her efforts in naturalizing her yard have attracted birds of prey, turning her property into an important hunting ground for local species.
With the Network of Nature’s resources, you can create a beautiful native plant garden that supports local wildlife and reflects your region’s natural environment. The website provides tools to help you identify your local ecozone and offers guidance on where to obtain plants suited to your area.
We remain committed to ensuring that Indigenous Knowledge informs every stage of the project, from planning to implementation. As the original stewards of the land, it is critical that Indigenous voices are heard and incorporated into the development of resources such as the Network of Nature database.
By blending Indigenous Knowledge and Western science, everyone in Canada will have a guided path towards a future where biodiversity thrives. The Network of Nature is ensuring that the approach to biodiversity is inclusive, holistic, and grounded in traditional ecological knowledge. A collaborative approach is the key to fostering a sustainable and biodiverse future for all.
