Drawing Attention To Species At Risk

On October 29 and 30, 2025, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CIER supported Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the First Peoples Group with the planning and operation of the Indigenous engagement session on species at risk.

Katie Laronde was asked to create a graphic recording for this session to build a deeper understanding and better highlight key themes.

Katie is from Temagami First Nation and a graduate of the graphic recording training program, which operated through Drawing Change Consulting and supported by the Species at Risk Act – Consultation, Cooperation, and Accommodation (SARA-CCA) project.

The goal of the engagement session, which included First Nations, Métis, and Inuit attendees from communities and organizations across Canada, was to discuss and share Indigenous Knowledge of species at risk.

Discussions included a reflection of Phase One engagement that occurred, and proposed frameworks and actions for future co-development of recovery planning.

Katie spent each day hand-drawing the key pieces from the discussions and created two final images. The team at CIER is thrilled to see that Katie has been asked to support numerous projects for and outside of CIER since graduating from the program.

This newsletter has previously showcased the work Katie has done and the success she has achieved. Since the third cohort of the graphic recording training program is underway, the Species At Risk team at CIER is continuing to highlight how this training program has created lasting positive impacts.

The current graphic recording training program has 12 participants from Indigenous communities across Canada. The program is funded through the SARA-CCA project and led by Drawing Change.

Currently, there is no date set for a fourth graphic recording training program. If that changes, plans will be announced on CIER’s social media channels.
